Teaching With a Cultural Eye | Oct 14-16, 2010

Today's urban educators need to develop the skills and awareness necessary to succesfully interact with students and families from diverse backgrounds. Teaching With a Cultural Eye participants examine the ways that their own cultural identities influence their interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.

Topics include:

  • Cultural Competence Begins With Self-Awareness | What we see in the world around us is a reflection of our own collection of experiences and identities (racial, socio-economic, gender, sexual orientation, language, etc.)
  • Seeing the Invisible: Systemic Oppression, Cultural Synchronicity, and Cultural Competence | Understand the connection between systemic oppression and the lack of cultural synchronicity in many classrooms.
  • Building a Learning Partnership | Learn to increase cultural synchronization in order to build stronger relationships with all of our students in the service of learning.
  • Formative Assessments | Explore the connection between strong learning partnerships and effective use of formative assessments.

Cost: $750 for three-day institute.  Includes meals and resources.

Location: Nile Hall, in Oakland's historic Preservation Park.  1233 Preservation Park Way, Oakland, CA.

Participants Say:

"This has been one of the most valuable activities I've participated in for a long time.  I felt uncomfortable, challenged, and inspired.  This will make a major difference in my classroom!"  - Kathryn LaMance, 6th Grade Teacher, Knox County Schools, TN

"[I learned] how to integrate my understanding and practice of cultural competence into specific teaching moves that might address the needs of my lowest performing students." - Bob Adams Teacher / Math Chair, Portola Middle School, El Cerrito, CA

"I hope in the future that all schools start off with teachers learning these concepts.  If they do I believe the world will change for the better; this is how education should be."
