| Oakland Unified is hosting a series of community meetings to discuss how the District can continue to boost student performance while remaining fiscally responsible. Meetings will be hosted by Interim Superintendent Roberta Mayor at schools throughout the city. OUSD is California’s most improved large, urban school system over the past four years, and during that time, we have taken significant steps to strengthen the District’s financial position. Yet, there is still much work to be done in order to accelerate student achievement and provide for the long-term financial stability of Oakland Unified. Meetings, to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will be hosted by Interim Superintendent Dr. Roberta Mayor or a member of her Senior Cabinet on the following dates: Community Engagement Meeting Schedule Topic: Optimum School Size & Results-Based Budgeting Thursday, September 18 Urban Promise Academy 3301 East 18th Street | Monday, September 22 Claremont Middle School 5750 College Avenue | Monday, September 22 West Oakland Middle School 991 14th Street | Tuesday, September 23 Elmhurst Community Prep 1800 98th Avenue | Monday, September 29 Montera Middle School 5555 Ascot Drive | Tuesday, September 30 Frick Middle School 2845 64th Avenue |
All meetings are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The District is evaluating two key components of the Multi-Year Financial Sustainability Plan: Small schools and their optimum school size along with Results-Based Budgeting. What does this mean?
Based on the District’s current fiscal situation and best practices research, OUSD is examining whether a number of its schools may be too small to both meet the needs of our students and remain economically sustainable. Voice your opinion: The community will provide feedback on the small-schools analysis and assist in determining the criteria used to identify schools that may be too small to sustain themselves. We invite the public to this discussion in the hope that we, as a community, can collectively understand and debate the criteria for improving OUSD schools so all students have a chance to succeed. |
