Coaching For Educational Equity Institute

This summer, BayCES will host two Coaching for Educational Equity (CFEE) Institutes on June 25 - 27, 2008 and August 6 - 8, 2008. CFEE is an in-depth, participatory seminar that provides coaching strategies for equitable school reform for professional coaches, peer coaches, support providers, and education leaders.

CFEE participants leave with greater insight into the effects of power and privilege on students and adults in schools, and skills to coach and facilitate leadership development and school transformation. Coaching for Educational Equity will be examined through topics that include:

  • Developing skills and practices for culturally proficient coaching in schools and districts.
  • Coaching instructional leadership development.
  • Coaching the development of professional learning communities focused on equity.
  • Recognizing and working with issues of emotional and social intelligence.

Why Attend The CFEE Institute?
In order to seriously address issues of educational equity, school coaches must depart from "business as usual." This Institute provides precious space, materials, and experienced coaches to support participants to critically reflect upon what it means to take up equity work as a school coach in one's local context in a thoughtful, provocative, and effective ways.

School coaches, coach leaders, other support providers or administrators may find reasons for attending among the following questions:

  • Do you find it challenging to facilitate productive dialogue when issues of equity are raised in your school community?
  • Do you have a clear coaching 'theory of action' for how to identify and eliminate policies, practices and behaviors resulting from an inequitable public school system?
  • Are you frustrated with the lack of progress your school community has made building bridges across difference, despite your commitment to do so?
  • Do you want to gain skills and practices for effectively coaching the development of leaders who are committed and able to take on issues of equity in their local context?
  • Do you think it would be beneficial for you to learn and share with colleagues locally and from around the country about coaching for educational equity?

Participants will leave with:

  • Increased self-awareness and knowledge about issues of systemic oppression, power and privilege.
  • Practical methods for improving relational trust within the school and community.
  • Skills to coach and facilitate leadership development and school change.
  • Strategies for engaging in deeper dialogue about culturally responsive pedagogy, student achievement and equity in the classroom.
