Coaching For Educational Equity Institute | August 4-6, 2010

Every leader is a coach.  Every coach is a leader.  The Coaching for Educational Equity Institute provides the knowledge and skills that National Equity Project (formerly BayCES) coaches have employed to develop the leadership of hundreds of principals, teachers, and other leaders committed to educational equity.

Coaching for Educational Equity (CFEE) Institute

Coaches and other change leaders need a high level of expertise in adult learning and facilitation to foster new behaviors and practices in challenging contexts. The Coaching for Educational Equity (CFEE) Institute  trains professional or peer coaches to develop leaders and teams that can effectively address inequities in their schools, districts, communities, and nonprofit organizations.

The National Equity Project CFEE framework draws from our extensive research in group facilitation, leadership studies, organizational change, adult learning, and cultural competence, and our 14 years of experience in executive and educational coaching. Our institutes are highly interactive with time allotted for individuals and teams to reflect on their learning, practice new approaches, and make plans for trying new approaches at their sites or in their work. Institutes are designed especially for teams to develop their cohesion and to collaborate on implementing their institute learning back at their site, but individual participants will benefit as well.
Each team or table receives the support of a trained coach. Some of the main topics include:
Day 1: Getting Ourselves Ready to Coach for Equity
- Listening as a Coaching (and Leadership) Strategy
- Protocols for Improving Listening and Discussion
- Definitions of Educational Equity
- Changing the Discourse in Schools
- The Critical Lenses of Coaching for Equity
- Pair Discussions / Team Time
Day 2: Essential Coaching Skills and Practice
- The National Equity Project Coaching Cycle
- Establishing a Coaching Relationship
- Six Coaching Interventions
- Coaching Demonstrations
- Trio Practice
Day 3: Moving it Forward, Taking it Back
- The Role of the Facilitator
- Managing the Group Dynamic
- Trio Practice
- Team Time

Each participant receives a 150-page Coaching for Equity Resource Book with tools, summaries of agenda topics, and background reading.

Participant Testimonials

Best professional development I have experienced throughout my teaching career. It was both a process of self-discovery and acquisition of practical skill facilitated by caring and knowledgeable professionals.
- Michelle Estekantchi, Consultant - Diversity Management, Halifax Regional School Board, Canada

The actual experience was wonderful; the days were well organized, safe spaces were masterfully created, the facilitators were brilliant, plus the tools and resources offered were immediately useful.
- Sherene Randle, Lead Teacher, Berkeley High School

Anti-racist approaches to education leadership requires constant learning and re-training. I do not know of a more effective, progressive, and professional organization from which to draw practical learning on this topic that can be used "real time" in the field.
- Salomé Portugal, School Support Manager, New Leaders New Schools

This was by far one of the best professional development opportunities I have experienced in a long time.  The insights, valuable strategies, and user-friendly resources have empowered me to return to my school site as a catalyst for change and personal transformation.
- Nicole Scott, Teacher, Sheridan Elementary School

[CFEE] training has helped me tune my observations so that I can clearly see inequities happening on my school site. It has given me the tools to listen carefully and think before responding to people involved in these inequities. [The National Equity Project] has helped build my courage to confront these inequities so that our children can go on to succeed.
- Claire Fisher, Resident Principal, New Leaders New Schools

Thank you for the excellent Institute. I often find myself feeling that we don't delve deep enough when addressing the issues of equity. At the end of this Institute I can honestly say we went deep and reflected on the challenge of the equity work ahead of us. I leave hopeful.
- Maria Cárdenas, Program Manager, Fremont Unified School District

Many times we focus on data to ensure equitable outcomes... This Institute drilled down on what we should actually tune into - the person(s) behind the work... the heart of the work... those who will move the work forward in a more meaningful and transformative way.
- Teresa Bonaccorsi, Program Manager, Fremont Unified School District, CA

This should be a prerequisite for any education leader working in/with communities of color.
- Amy Boyle, Instructional Coach, Coliseum College Preparatory Academy, Oakland
